Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra
The Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra (ANPO), based in Yerevan, Armenia, is renowned as one of the leading orchestras of the former Soviet Union. Founded in 1925 by Arshak Adamian and Alexander Spendiaryan, it serves as the national center of professional orchestral music in Armenia.
Eduard Topchjan, appointed as Artistic Director and Principal Conductor in October 2000, leads the ANPO into the new millennium, promoting cultural and musical awareness. Under his direction, the orchestra regularly performs classical, operatic, national, and contemporary music.
The ANPO performs concerts at its residence, the Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall, an architectural jewel of Yerevan designed by Alexander Tamanian, with a capacity of 1300 seats.
Since its foundation, the ANPO has collaborated with many of the world’s leading artists, such as David Oistrach, Sviatoslav Richter, Mstislav Rostropovitch, Emil Gilels, Placido Domingo, and many others. The orchestra features the works of Armenian and international composers, supporting new orchestral works to engage regular visitors, connoisseurs, tourists, and young people.
The ANPO has performed extensively across the globe, including notable tours in the USA, Canada, Austria, Germany, France, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, and Japan. Prestigious performances include a concert at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, and a successful performance at the Berliner Konzerthaus in 2018.
The orchestra has released more than 40 CDs, including highly acclaimed recordings such as Armenian Rhapsody by BIS Records and Mozart Piano Concerti and Overtures by Oehms Classics. Recent projects include recording all nine symphonies of Ludwig van Beethoven in both audio and 4K video, an unprecedented endeavor in the former USSR and beyond.
The ANPO hosts the annual Yerevan International Music Festival, attracting internationally acclaimed soloists and providing master classes for young Armenian musicians.
By decision of the Mayor of Yerevan, the ANPO was awarded the commemorative medal “Emblem of Yerevan” for its 90th anniversary, recognizing its significant contribution to the cultural life of the city.
Prominent international specialists frequently commend the ANPO for its nuanced sound, impressive string section, and charismatic Artistic Director, acknowledging its growing performance level and increased international status.
